McCullers and Pallante have combined for nearly 6 ERA across about 30 innings, with McCullers striking hitters out but also issuing walks and Pallante allowing plenty of traffic, and both teams’ bullpens have been leaned on heavily, with Houston especially thin in high-leverage spots due to injuries to arms like Hader, Bennett Sousa and Cody Bolton. Daikin Park can play lively when the ball is in the air, and with Alvarez, Walker, Gorman and Altuve all in form and already trading homers in this series, I lean to runs continuing to come and will grade Over 9 at -110 as a B- given the decent scoring environment but the inherent variance in totals. St. Louis has been living in tight games all month and now rides a three-game win streak into Daikin Park, while Houston’s 8-13 start includes a lot of close losses driven by an overtaxed, injury-riddled pitching staff, which tilts me toward taking the extra 1.5 runs with the Cardinals. Even without Lars Nootbaar, the Cardinals’ everyday group is relatively intact, and with Walker’s 8-homer start, Gorman’s three-run blast and Herrera’s two-run shot already coming against this Astros staff in this series, the Cards’ lineup has shown it can keep pace with a star-heavy but slumping Houston offense.
