Rangers vs Cubs

Streaking Rangers Seek Spoils in Windy City War

Texas Rangers

Rangers (8-2) VS Cubs (7-5)

April 8, 2025 | 7:40 PM ET | Wrigley Field, Chicago

Chicago Cubs
Moneyline Pick: Texas Rangers (+135) - Grade B+

Corey Seager and the red-hot Rangers ride into Wrigley Field on the back of a five-game winning streak, while the North Siders have stumbled to a 2-3 stretch in their last five matchups. Despite the Cubbies holding favorite odds at -160, Texas looks primed to continue their dominant run. The Cubs are still without starting shortstop Dansby Swanson (oblique), and their bullpen has shown signs of strain, surrendering crucial late-inning leads twice in the last week. Meanwhile, Josh Jung is currently on the injured list with neck spasms and will miss this matchup, taking a key right-handed bat out of Texas’s lineup. The Rangers will send veteran lefty Patrick Corbin to the mound instead of Nathan Eovaldi, and while Corbin has had a rough stretch in recent seasons, he offers a change-of-pace presence against a Cubs lineup still trying to find consistency. Chicago counters with Jameson Taillon, not Shōta Imanaga, and Taillon has been serviceable early but remains vulnerable to power-hitting teams like Texas, who currently rank among the AL’s top five in OPS. With Texas offering +135 value against an injury-hampered and inconsistent Chicago squad, this represents a quality mid-season value bet with moderate risk. Recommendation: Take the Rangers at plus money while the line holds. Grade: B+. Odds and availability are subject to change.

Over/Under Pick: Over 7.5, (-110) - Grade: B+

Marcus Semien and the scorching Rangers head into historic Wrigley riding a five-game win streak, and they won’t be slowing down against the Cubs' shaky mid-rotation. The North Siders have dropped three of their last four and will start Jameson Taillon, not Jordan Wicks, as he remains active and scheduled to pitch tonight. Chicago’s rotation has lacked consistency, and Texas boasts a .295 team batting average against left-handers this season, which could still play a factor if the Cubs go to the bullpen early. Wyatt Langford's bat appears fully awake, adding another threat to an already potent Rangers offense. On the flip side, Patrick Corbin—not Andrew Heaney—gets the start for Texas, and he’ll be making one of his first appearances in a Rangers uniform. With the Cubs’ bats led by Cody Bellinger and Seiya Suzuki (while Dansby Swanson remains out with an oblique strain), Chicago still has the firepower to answer back. While the weather isn’t expected to be particularly hitter-friendly, both lineups have a recent history of scoring in bunches and the bullpens are far from dominant right now. With both offenses heating up and injuries creating mismatch opportunities, the over looks promising even at a modest 7.5 total. Odds and availability are subject to change.

Spread Pick: Chicago Cubs, -1.5 (-140) - Grade: B

Riding a three-game win streak, the North Siders are heating up just in time to welcome the defending champions, Texas Rangers, to the Friendly Confines. With Marcus Stroman dialed in and coming off a gem against St. Louis, the Cubs hold a slight pitching edge, especially as Texas starter Patrick Corbin continues easing back from a recent injury after struggling in his previous start. The Rangers' lineup remains potent—Corey Seager and Adolis García are both locked in—but they’ll miss the defensive steadiness of Josh Jung, who is sidelined with a hamstring strain. Chicago’s offense has been opportunistic, with Seiya Suzuki and Ian Happ both consistently reaching base, and Cody Bellinger boasting strong career numbers against Texas pitching. Though the Cubbies have had early-season inconsistencies, their current momentum and favorable pitching matchup against a banged-up Rangers squad makes covering the -1.5 spread a solid value play, especially at Wrigley. Grade: B. Odds and availability are subject to change.
