Surging Phillies Aim to Sting Struggling Braves in Atlanta

Philadelphia Phillies

Phillies (7-2) VS Braves (1-8)

April 08, 2025 | 7:15 PM ET | Truist Park, Atlanta, GA

Atlanta Braves
Moneyline Pick: Philadelphia Phillies (+100) - Grade: B+

Philadelphia rides into Truist Park looking like the team to beat in the NL East—at least for now—as the red-hot Fightins have opened with a stellar 7-2 record, while Atlanta limps to a 1-8 start that has many fans already reaching for the panic button. The Braves' early-season woes have been compounded by the absence of star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr., who is nearing full recovery from his ACL tear but remains sidelined.  Zack Wheeler, one of Philly’s most consistent arms over the past three seasons, is expected to toe the rubber and brings a commanding 2.95 ERA lifetime against the Braves into this matchup.  Atlanta will counter with Bryce Elder, who has struggled early this season with a 5.76 ERA, which doesn’t inspire confidence, particularly against a Phillies lineup featuring the red-hot Bryce Harper and Alec Bohm, who’s had success against Elder historically. While Atlanta’s talent ceiling remains high, this current skid combined with key injuries makes them a fading favorite on Tuesday. With nearly even odds, the Phillies provide solid value on the moneyline. Recommendation: Take the underdog Phils at +100 with confidence, particularly if Wheeler pitches deep and the bullpen continues its recent consistency. Grade: B+ for value and momentum. Odds and availability are subject to change.

Over/Under Pick: Under 7, (-110) - Grade: B+

The Fightin' Phils are riding high with a 7-2 record and are seeking their fifth straight win as they roll into Atlanta for a division matchup with the reeling Bravos, who are stuck in an early-season spiral with a 1-8 record. Despite the Braves' recent struggles, much of their slump can be attributed to the loss of Ronald Acuña Jr., who is nearing full recovery from his ACL tear but remains sidelined, decimating the heart of their order.  Without him, Atlanta's offense has sputtered, averaging just 2.3 runs per game over their current five-game losing streak. On the mound, Philly sends Zack Wheeler—who owns a 2.95 ERA across his career vs. Atlanta—while Atlanta counters with Bryce Elder, who's been inconsistent at Truist Park and owns a 5.76 ERA this season.  While both teams boast capable lineups, injuries, recent momentum disparities, and dominant past pitching performances all suggest this divisional duel won’t turn into a slugfest. The number feels accurate, but given the current trends, it's worth taking the Under with moderate confidence. Odds and availability are subject to change.

Spread Pick: Phillies, +1.5 (-250) - Grade: A

Braves bats have gone ice-cold, and with Atlanta now slumping at 1-8 on the season, there’s little reason to believe they’ll reverse course against a red-hot Fightin’ Phils squad. With the Phillies riding a five-game win streak and their lineup firing on all cylinders—led by Trea Turner, Bryce Harper, and Alec Bohm—all signs point toward continued dominance. Meanwhile, Atlanta’s missing a key piece in the lineup with Ronald Acuña Jr. sidelined due to ACL recovery, leaving a hole the shaky Braves offense can’t fill.  Aaron Nola, historically strong against the Bravos (3.59 ERA over his career vs. Atlanta), gets the ball tonight and is well-poised to silence the Braves' lineup, which is struggling to produce runs.  Atlanta’s bullpen has been heavily taxed through early season losses, which makes covering a -1.5 spread a tall order. With better form, better health, and better pitching, Philly getting 1.5 runs feels like a high-value pick. Grade: A. Odds and availability are subject to change.
