Buffalo Sabres
Moneyline Pick - Buffalo Sabres (100): B+
With Tampa Bay slightly ahead in the standings but coming in with a thinned blue line (Hedman plus multiple depth defenders on injured reserve) and Brandon Hagel banged up, I’m willing to fade the road favorite and back Buffalo at 100 on home ice. The Lightning have righted the ship after an early-March slump, but the Sabres’ broader 35-9-4 surge and their emotional 8-7 home win over Tampa a month ago underline how dangerous this group is when Thompson, Tuch and Dahlin are rolling, especially against a defense missing its minute-eating No. 1. Buffalo’s recent 2-3-2 wobble tempers the confidence level, yet they’ve already shown they can get to Vasilevskiy in multiple ways, while Luukkonen and Lyon have been steady enough that Buffalo doesn’t need to completely shut Tampa down to cash this. Add in the playoff-seeding stakes — home ice in a potential second-round series is still on the table — and I like the Sabres’ size and depth up front to tilt a close game their way, even against Kucherov’s line. Given that I see this as essentially a coin flip priced at even money, the edge in value goes to Buffalo, good enough for a B+ grade on the moneyline. Odds and availability are subject to change. Over/Under Pick - Over 6.5, (-118): B
The last meeting between these teams in Buffalo turned into a track meet with 15 combined goals and a pile of penalties, and while we can’t simply project a repeat of 8-7, the ingredients for another up-tempo, high-event night are still there. Tampa’s defense is missing Hedman and multiple depth pieces, which forces heavier minutes onto aging and second-pair defenders just as they’re dealing with a big, heavy Sabres forward group that cycles well and drives the middle of the ice, while Kucherov, Point and Guentzel remain one of the league’s most lethal trios at exploiting gaps in coverage on the other side. Even with Vasilevskiy and Luukkonen capable of stealing games, this matchup features two top-end power plays and a recent history of bad blood that can feed special-teams opportunities, all of which leans toward goals when the whistles start flying. The playoff context could nudge both coaches toward tightening structure, but given the offensive talent and Tampa’s blue-line attrition, I still project more scenarios where one side forces the other to chase and opens the game up. At 6.5 with both sides juiced equally at -118, I’ll ride the attacking upside and take the Over, but the added juice and the possibility of a more conservative playoff-style script keep this in the B range rather than higher. Puckline Pick - Buffalo Sabres, +1.5 (-250): B-
Given how evenly matched these teams are in talent and standings, plus the stakes for the Atlantic title, this projects as a game Tampa is far more likely to win by one than to run away with, which makes the Sabres +1.5 puckline attractive from a probability standpoint even if the price at -250 is rich. Buffalo has already shown they can skate with the Lightning in multiple styles — trading chances in that chaotic 8-7 game or grinding through tighter contests earlier in the year — and with home ice, last change and a largely healthy top six against a Tampa defense missing Hedman and several depth options, it’s tough to script many scenarios where the Sabres are completely blown out. At the same time, you are paying a premium for that cushion, and the empty-net chaos late in close games always leaves the door open for a backdoor cover by the favorite, especially with Kucherov’s line on the ice in six-on-five situations. Because I like Buffalo outright on the moneyline, this puckline is more of a lower-upside safety play: the win probability is high enough to warrant a B- grade, but the combination of heavy juice and empty-net variance caps the overall value of this position.
